Why Jony Ive Leaving Apple Is Such a Big Deal

obviously Johnny I've is a larger-than-life figure at Apple and in the way that we all use technology and our smartphones today how big a deal is this I mean look it's a big deal I think apart from Steve Jobs Apple's co-founder and former CEO there is no one more associated with the current generation of Apple than Johnny I've he's been responsible for the look and feel of all of the familiar Apple products you know principally the iPhone he was very heavily involved in Apple Park the new Apple headquarters design so I mean it's it's a big Mis given how important he has been to Apple's recent history and its resurrection from kind of near bankruptcy that said as someone who's covered Apple for many many years over the last two three years we've been asking the question how involved it is Johnny I've still you know certainly when he he took a little bit of a break to focus on the headquarters that was a question a lot of folks were asking we actually have Gene Munster on the phone now of Luke Capital Jean obviously covered Apple for a very very long time as an analyst and now continues to cover the company at loop gene what's your take Emily its he's iconic but at the same time this has been we've been waiting for this for the past really since 2015 when he moved to his chief design officer role and as that happened then as we started here you just mentioned his involvement with Apple Park and the design there and then over the last few years he's just play less of a role even with some of his videos and they've announced new products that there are different events and so this is something that we have largely we've been anticipating the company's been managing for this and and kind of building a team around him and last is that you know they've been adding other talents outside of design talent more recently so the simple takeaway is that it is more or less to be expected but that that comment I think takes away from the impact that he has had on Apple right certainly he's had a in all of Apple's most popular most iconic products in the last couple of decades you wonder if he'll still be narrating those videos at the Apple events his voice is also quite memorable Shira you know the question has been asked over the last months and years can Apple still innovate does Apple still have what it takes can Apple do the next big thing can Apple do that without Johnny eyes well look I wonder if if this departure signals the end of this sort of cult of the designer and Apple right people who obsess over every bezel and the look of the home button and I think it's clear that the future of technology is not in hardware but in software in artificial intelligence in the sort of Internet of Things in interactions of computing into the fabric of daily lives maybe without even interacting through hardware and so I think this is now the era of software and not the era of hardware that Johnny I've obviously specialized in Emily if I can jump in there yeah let me just address that that thought – absolutely agree that we're in the age of the Year of software that AI has an impact but I feel strongly that Apple will continue to obsess over the details of hardware in part because of what Apple has been laying over the last few years as Johnny's legacy as design is one of Apple's core competency and obviously you can have design around the software UI but this hardware design this unique place just keep in mind where Apple is that relative to the rest of tech they do the full stack and that is something that is unique and so I would expect kind of that attention to detail to remain despite Johnny's departure

Ive was forced to push boundaries during the Jobs era but since then has been forced to play it safe with Apple design becoming boring and in many instances lagging behind the competition. Apple is in SAFE MODE and there is no one at Apple who can push Johnny to the limit anymore. With the move to form his own company Ive can once again be set free to create what has not yet been thought of. Good luck Johnny.

Smart move, Ive is not waiting for the cancer to take control over him, as it was the case of Steve Jobs. He is following the path of Bill Gates who retired, is still alive and spending time with the family, doing the things that he like most.

I feel like this would be a place to talk about design and how much it contributes towards Apple’s success. Look at Apple Park, the ufo by Foster. And music started each Apple fans. The cult of art and life. These are the line Apple drew from the techies of Nokia IBM Microsoft, and kicked these nerds in their butts. It’s about your life and art that made you different. Apple was a design company with products, technology was a engineering tour de force, but in the end it’s a art fashion life that made its users felt like a nobility from the future, not dr Frankenstein.

Then why do we even bother to design or build more advanced hardware?

As a long time apple fanatic, Jony was someone many looked up to next to Jobs. His departure officially ends the Steve Jobs era to one that is as clueless and wallstreet-devout as the years Steve was fired and absent from Apple.

Hmm so here we have it again: innovation through software is the big thing. Explain that to Mercedes Bens. Build a car that looks like a Lada but drives like and is as advanced as a Benz. That is not going to fly. Design is probably more important for consumers than the software. You can’t show off software in your pocket or in your living room.

🤣🤦‍♂️ Bloomberg’s opinion is laughable as you’d think Jony Ive's had died. He’s still gonna work with Apple as well as his own projects. Plus Apple has some amazing designers and it’s good to see Evans Hankey will be the first woman to head up their industrial design team. 🍏👏

IoT doesn't preclude hardware. especially as servers already limit software as choke points. innovative hardware solutions (something better than alexa to help around the house for example) that can handle data processing and memory load as a work around to server limits would be IoT and comprised of both hard and soft wares. .
