I find that the way the kids would make the tower is a similar way a good programmer (which is on a par with engineer in a way) builds a program: a program consists of tens, sometimes hundreds of unrelated algorithms that have to work together. So what does a good programmer do? He tries each of the operation separately while he builds it so he's reasonably confident in the end that it's going to work all together. Only a very very confident programmer will go and write stuff and makes it run correctly almost on the first try: and that's usually only those cases where you really build something you have done before and the difference is too minor for you to feel like testing every and each bit before you finish it. But yeah, I guess programmers and engineers have this in common…
