Portland City Council debates facial recognition technology


MEDFORD WAS HURT. JEFF: PORTLAND CITY LEADERS HELD A WORK SESSION TODAY ON A PROPOSAL TO BAN THE USE OF FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY. COMMISSIONER JOANN HARDESTY IS LEADING THE PUSH. FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED FOR SURVEILLANCE PURPOSES BY LAW ENFORCEMENT, COMPANIES, AND EVEN SOME SCHOOLS. HARDESTY SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE HARASSED BY THE TECHNOLOGY, OR WORRIED ABOUT THEIR FACES BEING SCANNED. BECAUSE THE SOFTWARE IS SO UNRELIABLE TO WOMEN AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR, WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY SO IT IS NOT BIASED, AND HOW THE DATA IS COLLECTED.
