Modul University Research Series – Degrowth and Technology

people could be simply defined as the voluntary and conscious attempt to downscale our levels of consumption of material and energy and this is important at the same time creating a more democratic more trust more political Italian society D growth is at the realization that the type of economic growth that we've seen in the last decades and we know the type of economic growth is neither feasible anymore nor is it desirable this is because we are reaching in for very important biophysical limits one of those limits is the limits of resources we had there's lots of scarce resources and we need them to run our system to run our society and D becoming increasingly scarce for example like like fossil fuels and we have the phenomenon of peak oil but even say if we had enough fossil fuels to keep us going for even longer with our we should be it's not a very good idea to do that because we have another important limit which is the limit of our atmosphere to absorb co2 emissions and that brings us to the problem of climate change which is of course one we urgently need to address these limits that I've been talking of we should rather see them also as an opportunity it can be a motivation for us to transform to transform our society the DeGroat approach towards technology is a rather different one to the dominant view or dominant approach or attitude towards technology which is one of where we see technology and innovations always good the more the better and doesn't matter which type or which application or which purpose the growth takes a more reflective approach it asks critical questions and most of all these questions could be summarized in terms of what technologies do we need and want for the kind of society we want to live in d growth is a hot topic right now because we see increasing interest in issues like climate change like the European Union as we know has this goal of a post-carbon economy by 2050 and for example in a research project and I mean we'll be looking at the different pathways to get towards that goal and increasing is it's also quite obvious that for reaching these goals a reduction of our consumption will be necessary there's a growing interest in the concept and Mister in a way it's good news for people who are very active in the movement but also people who really care for creating a better world for future generations our children you

Usury-based credit systems need to be reformed; or, better yet, switched over to credit systems that disallow the practice of usury. Usury is the leverage point in our complex system that serves as the impetus for growth. Energy throughput may act as the enabling factor for continued growth (or its limiting factor), but the introduction of rent-seeking practices and interest-bearing debt is the sociological factor that necessitates growth. Growth (and de-growth) is a sociological-monetary phenomenon that arises directly from the physical phenomenon of resource consumption.
