Is The Japanese Education System Failing? | ASIAN BOSS

To be fair, what was said in this video is relevant to the education system in many other Asian countries. We believe that intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and creativity are super important in today's world but the current system is set up to achieve the exact opposite. Here at Asian Boss, we create content to raise awareness, start a conversation and challenge the status quo. It's up to you to speak up, listen to different opinions and engage in discussions. I went o university here a very well known on e, but the quality I can say is extremely low, the students have no interest on learning , you cannot ask question ever to the teacher , some teacher are jerks like robots who just copy and paste every lesson. They consider the teacher here as a supreme been. And those low quality students when started to work they are already brain washed.
At class or at work you cannot be yourself you need always to adapt with what the others do, happiness mean that you are not working hard. If you are a foreigner you will be forever a foreigner never treated as equal EVER. You need to be an entertainer or always do something to please them or ele they will not get to you. Also if you Didi one mistake once you will pay for it until your grave.

It's the same thing happening in other countries – someone from the government without much understanding of all the facts and structure of the education system in that other country makes a decision "Hey, they seem to do pretty damn well with this other type of education system. Let's do it here too". Then they rip it apart, take important chunks out (example that the guy gave: they removed the Saturday school but didn't bother organizing the children to do something else TOGETHER) and wonder why the change leads to a disaster. Not to mention that one needs to take the huge cultural differences. While in Finland the members of society try to distinguish themselves, Japanese society has more of a hive structure where people don't want to stick out making applying an education system that goes against that rather pointless.

It was stressful for me as well when I studied in Korea. Even though there were less exams than what I have here in the Philippines, it was stressful to go to academy after going to school, I also had to go to academy on vacation times to prepare for the new school semester exam, and the exams itself are stressful because you have the exam paper, but you also have the official exam marker.
Anyways, I'm happy that I'm back here in tge Philippines. Even though sometimes internet or other services are uncomfortable and long, but I feel it's a better life here than in Korea.
Fun fact, the place that we live in the Philippines is nicknamed the "California of Asia". So, yes, there are many foreigners not only in that place, but also at school.

I think the east education and the west education are two extremes.
East: WORK WORK WORK, I make the rule, u don't question, you obey. Why do we have to do this, don't ask, other people do it, the ones before us do it, so we do it too?
West: PLAY PLAY PLAY, why do we have to work, why do we have to follow the system, how can make it better, let's just be happy.
If the east and west can bond, and balance each other, they can make the best system

I dunno if Finland's system is all it's cracked up to be. Finland took a tumble in their more recent PISA test results and didn't fair nearly as well as they did when Moore was touting their system. Currently Singapore dominates in all PISA subjects. While results vary by subject, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong were all in the top finishing countries. I think people like Michael Moore were eager to laud Finland's system when they were on top and quickly called for America to emulate Finnish practices. There's not a snowball's chance in hell that American parents will tolerate an attempt to emulate the Singaporean or Japanese school system now that Finland's scores are down.

Well I live in France and there in middle school we finish at 17h (5pm) and in highschool at 6pm. Not every day, but it's possible. Plus the transports, plus activities (sport, music..), plus homework, exams etc. It really is an exhausting schoollife, to me at least, so I can relate with this video. Moreover, teachers can be really mean.. Like, I was traumatized in middle school by the languages and math teachers. I was really timid and stressed and the english/spanish teachers always liked to tell me "speak louder !! Why do your face turns red?? Go to the board so that everyone can see how stressed you are and how bad you do!" (Those are real thing they'd say to me..). One time, I was like 13, I peed on myself because the math teacher, really severe, was yelling on me, so I started balbutiating, which was infuriating all of those teachers, i felt so much fear that I had to pee and i couldn't control my body…. I knew so many humilations really 😔
I always had a fear of teacher, bc when I entered primary school, i had a physical abusive teacher that once gave a child, who did bad at a test, his own test to eat it (yes the sheet).
It was still early 2000s at this time, now if a teacher'd do that he would be expelled inmediately though
But well, it's still really traumatazing.
You can feel free to share your own school life experience 🙂
In my case, it's what we can call the "school of life" that taught me a lot of things !

I think my schooling days were the happiest days in my life. My parents never believe in cram schools or extra classes, so I spent most of my after school hours reading light children/teenage novels and doing homework (in Malaysia, school usually starts at 7.30 am until 1.30 pm with 30-45 minutes break around 10 am. Our minimum schooling days is 190 days per year).

I was fortunate enough to experience Japanese education system as an exchange student for a short time. I saw many of my Japanese classmates fell asleep during classes and I didn’t know why they do that at that time (until I heard the horror story of cram schools, of course. Weird enough, Japanese teachers never scolded them for sleeping in class, unlike in Malaysia).

I was never a brilliant student to be honest but I think I did just fine (my younger siblings are better than me). I now own two small businesses and pretty much happy with my life. Most of my schoolmates are quite successful too – majority of them are now doctors.

2:06 is such a good example of Asian school system. What's crazy is like, if a rule has a reason, fine, but everyone should be able to answer why that rule exists. And if it's an outrageous rule, there should be a means to get rules changed like a suggestion box or a committee to oversee these things. When upper management changes rules without representation from students/teachers in the classroom, it leads to even stranger rules that either don't address the problem or further exacerbate it.

Japan and India have something in common about their education system. I loved the Finnish school system. In highschool I have to attend classes of 7 hours then we had to attend tuition classes everyday for 2 more hours. Then the burden of homework's and assignments.
The thing gets more tough when we reach 11th and 12th standard. I don't think we got enough time in our 11th and 12th standard's. Schools were probably of 8 hours, then tutions of 2 hours everyday. Then comes coaching for engineering entrance examination. Along with that writing laboratory assignments and homeworks were terrible. Obsession for getting good grades is quite common, as it decides your entry in a decent college.
India should atleast learn something from Education system of Finland. They develop critical thinking in students. And our education system is busy producing white collar labourers.

To pursue a STEM career the student must do a lot of memorization cuz the body of existing knowledge is huge. It makes no sense for a student to start over as if the body of knowledge was like that in 1700. Many solutions to difficult problems in physics and engineering required many brilliant minds and decades of work….why re-invent the wheel?

Japan and S. Korea each have a much bigger share of the global economy – truly stellar performances – but Finland…not so much.

If one wants to look at creativity….well, it was Sony that came up with Playstation, and of course there is Nintendo. From Japan we also get anime and manga. Going back further Sony gave the world the Beta video tape format….better than USA created VHS. And so much more, including a lot of top notch automobile companies. Not much from Finland.

From Korea Samsung created the Android phone market (though I think the initial design was from USA). S. Korea is an industrial powerhouse with Samsung, LG and others making all sorts of things sold globally. Korean architect/engineers are famous for many of their impressive skyscrapers not just in Korea but built in other nations as well. Finland…not so much.

India is a place where students have to memorize, memorize, memorize and take tests, tests, tests. One result of that is huge global employment of Indian IT engineers. India also has a huge satelite launch business with a near perfect track record….also a space program, as well as a nicely developing military weopons sector producing some really impressive hardware. Indian economy is growing really fast.

Singapore….memorize, test, memorize, test. Result is, per capita, the most successful economy in world history by far….all without any natural resources, though a good location for a port….but it is a service port mostly and not an beginning or final destination. Finland…not so much.

I think one thing that the Japanese education system needs to change is to shift away from the obsolete teacher-centred learning model towards student-centred learning. AFAIK Japan operates under the old model that a teacher is a font of all knowledge and students are expected to passively absorb that teacher's knowledge. Modern teaching sees the teacher more as a director of learning.

Students should be doing more work than teachers in the classroom, after all, it's the students who are meant to be doing the learning. The teacher is there as a guide rather than a repository of knowledge. Simply feeding information to students isn't as effective in teaching as guiding students to discover that knowledge for themselves.

I'm sorry to break it to you but we do get homework, but not a lot. The teacher asks us how much homework we've got and if we've got a lot then we don't get homework from that class. :>

Japan as a country is far superior to Finland in every way including economy and science. Finnish education works for the Finnish because they don’t strive to be the best in the world. The Japanese are proud and hard working people.

not everything is 100% correct, since we do have tests in finland and we are graded/scored, we have homework, in the school i went it was normal to get couple of pages of homework from one subject. In 9th grade for us everything was crammed at the end of the year. We had to write couple of essays do group projects and had homework from every subject plus had a lot of tests, but hey maybe that's just the school i went.
