Elmhurst Woman Gives Up Engineering Career To Become Nun

OVER A YOUNG WOMAN FROM ELMHURST HEARD THE CALL FROM A HIGHER POWER GIVING UP HER LIFE FOR A LIFE OF SERVICE. SHE SAID IT’S A CHOICE THAT MATCHES THE VALUES OF OUR MILLENNIAL GENERATION. AT FIRST GLANCE, HERS MAY SEEM A CHOICE FROM ANOTHER TIME. A WOMAN IN A HABIT DEVOTING HER LIFE TO GOD. JESSICA LAMBERT STUDIED ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS HOPING TO WORK ON PROJECTS AIDING THE THIRD WORLD. THE INTENTION TO SERVE GOD WAS THERE AND I DID NOT THINK ABOUT BEING A SISTER. SHE LANDED A PROMISING JOB IN HER FIELD RIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL. I LOVED THE ADULT LIFE. I HAD MY APARTMENT AND INCOME AND I ENJOYED IT BUT MY HEART WAS STILL MISSING. SHE FOUND IT ON MISSION TRIPS AND SERVICE PROJECTS AND DEEPER CONVERSATION IN PRAYER. I TURNED TO GOD IN PRAYER AND ASKED HIM HOW HE WANTED TO USE MY LIFE TO HELP OTHERS. I THOUGHT BECOMING A SISTER WAS A WAY TO FULFILL THAT. SHE DREAMED OF SOME DAY GETTING MARRIED AND HAVING CHILDREN. SHE NEVER EVEN ATTENDED CATHOLIC SCHOOL. I NEVER EVEN SAW SISTERS EXCEPT SISTER ACT AND SOUND OF MUSIC. NOW AFTER TAKING HER FINAL VOWS AND JOINING THE SMALL ORDER OF THE FRANCIS CANS OF THE EUCARIST, SHE’LL WORK TO FEED THE POOR AT THE FOOD PANTRY AND TEACH RELIGION IN NEARBY SCHOOLS AND SPREAD THE WORD OF GOD’S COMPASSION. SHE SAYS IT’S A MISSION NOT OUT OF STEP WITH HER GENERATION. MILLENNIALS, WE’RE SEEKING AUTHENTICITY AND REAL RELATIONSHIP, THAT REAL PURPOSE AND NEED FOR LIFE. DO YOU HAVE GOALS TO CHANGE THE WORLD STILL? ABSOLUTELY. ALL THOUGH HOW THAT WILL HAPPEN, I THINK, HAS CHANGED OVER TIME. THAT USED TO BE THE IDEA OF AN ENGINEERING JOB AND BUILDING BRIDGES TO HAVE PEOPLE WALK TO IT AND FOR NOW, IT’S ANSWERING GOD’S CALL TO DO HIS GUIDED AND LOVE HIM THROUGH LOVING OTHERS. ON THE WEST SIDE, CBS 2 NEWS. THAT’S AN INCREDIBLE STORY. THAT’S HER VOWS RIGHT THERE OFFICIALLY. WE’RE DEFINITELY BENEFITING FROM HAVING HER ON THE WEST SIDE. THERE’S A REAL SHORTAGE OF PEOPLE.
