Cutting Edge app using technology to stop cyber-bullying

IN TONIGHT’S CUTTING EDGE, MIKE
WANKUM INTRODUCES US TO THE
YOUNG WOMAN WHO INVENTED IT. >> THE TEENAGE BRAIN IS LIKE A
CAR WITH NO BREAKS. MIKE: SHE UNDERSTANDS THE
TEENAGE BRAIN MORE THAN MOST HER
AGE. >> THE ONE PART OF YOUR BRAIN
THAT IS DEVELOPING IS HERE, THE
PART THAT CONTROLS IMPULSE
CONTROL AND DECISION-MAKING. MIKE: SHE IS COFOUNDER OF
RE-THINK, AN APP THAT HELPS
YOUNG PEOPLE THINK TWICE,
PREVENTING THEM FROM BECOMING A
CYBER BULLY. >> IT USES A COMPETITION OF
TRIGGER WORDS AND CONTEXT
SENSITIVE FILTERING TO DETERMINE
THE SENTIMENT AND THE MESSAGE. IT WILL PROMPT THE MUSIC — THE
USER, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO
DO THAT? MIKE: HER RESEARCH SHOWS 93% OF
THE TIME IT MAKES THE TEEN PAUSE
.
IF YOU TYPE "YOU ARE SO UGLY,"
RETHINK WOULD AUTOMATICALLY HIT
AN ALERT. >> I HIT CLEAR, THE MESSAGE
DISAPPEARS. AND YOU HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE,
EXACTLY. MIKE: THE APP DOES NOT COLLECT
INFORMATION ON ANYONE. KNOW THREE BUT YOU — NOBODY BUT
YOU KNOW IS WHAT YOU TYPE. >> HOW CAN A GIRL, WHEN YOUNGER
OF MYSELF, BE PUSHED TO TAKE HER
OWN LIFE? HOW DO WE LIVE IN A WORLD TODAY
WHERE SOMETHING LIKE THAT IS
ACCEPTABLE? >> IT BECAME HER LIFE MISSION TO
STOP CYBER BULLYING. RE-THINK IS NOW BEING USED BY
2.5 MILLION STUDENTS SINCE
LAUNCHING THREE YEARS AGO. >> IF YOU ARE A STUDENT AND
INTERESTED, YOU CAN BECOME AN
AMBASSADOR FOR YOUR COMMUNITY. AT RETHINK, WE ARE BY STUDENTS,
FOR STUDENTS. ED: I LOVE WHICH HE SAID AT THE
BEGINNING, THAT A TEENAGE BRAIN
IS LIKE A CAR WITHOUT BREAKS. EMILY: VERY ACCURATE I THINK. ED: IS IT AVAILABLE FOR APPLE
AND ANDROID? MIKE: IT IS AVAILABLE FOR BOTH,
AND FREE TO STUDENTS. ACCORDING TO THE CDC, STUDENTS
SPEND OVER 10 HOURS A DAY ON
THEIR DEVICES. AND HALF OF ALL TEENS HAVE
EXPERIENCED SOME KIND OF
CYBER-BULLYING.

The problem is no one is going to willingly download it. I don’t believe that students are downloading it
I do agree that cyber bullying is a problem but this is a terrible solution.
