Cloud Computing in 90 Seconds! | National Geographic

so what's the big idea about cloud computing to understand it you have to go backwards a long ways ever since people have that stuff they've had to figure out ways of tracking it counting on fingers didn't get you very far so 5,000 years ago they invented the abacus and while abacus is català have big numbers they have their limitations enter the calculator so we can tell you how much stuff you had but it couldn't hold your music collection your vacation pictures and Funniest Home Videos your encyclopedia or the yellow pages but before long the personal computer can do all that and now that you had a place to put all your stuff you got more and more and more of it soon your computer couldn't handle everything you wanted to cram it so where do you look for an answer the clouds well not literally the cloud is actually a bunch of giant Internet hard drives or servers where you can store all of your stuff so instead of filling up your computer with all your documents upload them to these servers any one of them has enough space to hold every book ever written and there are millions of servers and whether you know it or not you're probably using the cloud already all those emails you write and receive they're stored for all of them on your mail providers servers that's the cloud you're on so there you have it five thousand year history of cloud computing ninety seconds find out more about the origins of all things amazing and how it all affects you quantum physics augmented reality to nanomedicine check out the big idea i'll breakthroughs of the past shape the future available wherever books are sold

WOOOOW. So now I can store all my personal data on someone else's computer?? And give complete control over it to the corporations that own the servers(and U.S goverment). Simply amazing :O

video didn't explain it very well. Corporations own everything you put on the cloud and they can sell that information to other corporations with out your consent.

@paulabel1 cloud computing is awesome… however this video gets it all wrong, and oversimplifies the idea to the point where someone would think the internet is the cloud.

Then use 2 or 3 CDs or DVDs. The point is that you don't have to use somebody else's "cloud server".

thumbs up if you were expecting cloud computing to be cubic equations and imaginary numbers with square roots and logarithms and cosines, all working out millions of unknowns at the same time…

This is stupid. All you have to do is buy a CD burner and attach it to your PC. Then copy all your personal and financial files to a CD. Next, rent a safety deposit box at a bank, and stash the CD in there. Or stash it in your basement. Do this every few months, and your data will be safe. YOU DON'T NEED THIS HOKEY "CLOUD" SYSTEM.

I wouldn't say it's because the PC is running out of room, because it's very cheap now to buy terabytes of storage. Cloud computing just makes it easier to manage, available anywhere with wifi, and more secure.

This isn't particularly helpful when you have a crappy Internet connection like mine. 150KB/sec download, 30KB/sec upload… Yeah, not happening. I have over 1TB of space anyway; not to mention other hard drives I could use and various other computers all together…

@Ramsez broadly speaking, computing power sold as a service a la electricity. measured in something like cpu cycles per minute/hour/etc. most ordinary consumers don't realize it but amazon has been a pioneer and leader in the field. cloud computing and virtualization (another newfangled buzzword) is allowing for a lot of interesting stuff, such as for private corporations to eliminate the costs of building, staffing and maintaining massive data centers.
