The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is one of the many derivatives technologies born by the CERN research…so, they also fights for many things other than physic only.

They did not invent the internet, they wrote the world wide web, two different things.

You're foolish to think that CERN jobs are only in physics. I work as a Technical Student there, in the IT department (basically a 1 year internship) and I have no background in physics (comparable to what it would be needed to work at the experiments).
I would say that 80% of the CERN employees are engineers.
Also your dreams are noble but don't compare apples with oranges. Scientific advance is as needed as solving social and medical problems.

Understanding physics is the first step in doing exaclty that. Basic research is the ..well basis for everything else. It lets us improve on ALL aspects of life, and in the process get rid of all you stated above.

"Vague but exciting", well I'm glad that was enough to go on to let people keep developing a cray little idea like a "world wide web". You guys are great.
