Artificial Intelligence for Robotics Course Overview

[Sebastian] My name is Sebastian Thrun, I’m a Stanford Research Professor, a Google VP and Fellow. In the class “Artificial Intelligence for Robotics”, I’d like to teach you the very basics of Artificial Intelligence and I’d like you to program all the basic algorithms for an actual self-driving car. In seven weeks time you should be able to build your own self-driving car. So, right now I’m in Google self-driving car, the car that my team and I have been building up over the last couple of years, and when I hit the button: [car] Auto-driving [Sebastian] and the car is driving itself. The steering wheel moves by itself, the gas, the brakes… it’s sheer magic. In seven weeks in this class, you will learn how to do this. You’ll really program the basic algorithms and data structures necessary to build self-driving cars. Prerequisites? Well, some programming experience is useful, we do this in Python. Linear Algebra and Statistics is useful but not required I just hope to see you in class on Feb 20th. CS 373: Programming a Robotic Car. Taught by Professor Sebastian Thrun.

Thank you so much for taking the red pill Dr Sebastian Thrun! I hope that you, Salman Khan, Andrew Ng, Peter Norvig, and youtube mathematicalmonk continue to improve and refine the teaching and learning process. I also highly commend you for giving so many people access to this wonderful education 🙂 Personally, I struggle with Baeysian networks the most. The AI text and other material have helped more than any statistics text book that I have read.

Just signed up! I can imagine how we'll develop all the modeling and algorithms, but are we really going to be explained how to do the empirical testing? I mean, that would require a whole chapter on setting up the sensors and levers that control the steering wheel and brakes. I imagine this will only give us the CS tools, not the practical, though I would love an explanation of how to map this to a Mindstorm robot car or something like that to see the algorithms in action. Fingers crossed!
